5 things you should buy abroad

Do you regularly holiday abroad, but always feel like everyone else comes home with much cooler and nicer souvenirs than you?

Few things beat the feeling of watching your luggage disappear into the logistical machinery at Gardermoen, scanning your boarding pass and squeezing through security. It is time for a holiday! Are you one of those who always makes sure to leave a little extra room in the suitcase? Among all the excitement and anticipation, many hope to return home with some great purchases — yet it is not always easy to know what is worth buying outside of Norway.

1. Unique furniture and interiors

“This flower pot? Oh no, you won’t find that anywhere — we bought it at a market in Marrakesh”… heard it before, but never had the chance to say it yourself? Grab the opportunity while you can! You do not even need to travel far to find unique interior treasures for your home. Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s undisputed design capital and is brimming with inspiring shops carrying all the big — and small — Danish designers. Pick up a new rug for the hallway, a colourful poster for the kitchen or a distinctive table lamp for the living room. And just like that, you have made sure no one you know will ever have the same piece of furniture!

2. A wide selection of sneakers

Are you tired of buying a new pair of trainers, only to match half the city for the next few months? Cool sneakers have become universally owned, and while the selection in Norway has grown rapidly, there is no doubt that you will find even more models and colour combinations abroad. It also often takes longer for Norwegian shops to receive the latest models. Enormous stores and long streets filled with shoes as far as the eye can see can be found wherever you holiday. Finally, it is your turn to own a truly unique pair of sneakers!

3. Great deals at outlet stores

An outlet store buys large batches of goods from well-known brands at a low price and sells them at a discount. Examples include samples from new collections, items from previous seasons or other goods that the manufacturer has been unable to sell at full price for various reasons. While there are certainly many outlet stores in Norway, it is no secret that abroad does it better.

The biggest brands have little or no interest in shipping their stock further than necessary. That is why the trend is biggest in fashion cities such as London, New York, Paris and Milan. That said, you do not need to look very hard to find an outlet almost anywhere in the USA. This is your chance to make the bargain of the year!

4. Exciting sweets and snacks

Even though Deli de Luca stocks a varied selection from abroad, there is no getting around the fact that many favourite treats are only available a flight away. It can be hard to return to everyday life when the weird crisp flavours, dipping sauces and dinosaur-shaped sweets you fell in love with are nowhere to be found around the corner. So be prepared next time you travel abroad. Make sure to stock up on everything you might need — and that your supply is large enough to last until your next visit to the same destination. Besides, what party trick is better than pulling out a bag of sweets nobody has ever heard of?

5. Everything is cheaper abroad

Whether it is tulip bulbs from the Netherlands, a DSLR camera or something else entirely — if the exchange rate is in your favour, you can end up saving a significant amount on, well, just about anything. Because most things genuinely cost far less the moment you cross the border.

And when you land at Gardermoen…

…carrying 20 full shopping bags from the tax-free shop, with luggage that has suddenly become 10 kg heavier — it is wonderful to have a car waiting in the car park. Dalen Parkering is Gardermoen’s cheapest parking with direct transport around the clock! Why tighten the holiday budget when you can save money on parking?
